These pictures were taken during the GRO Radioactive Source Survey, a calibration procedure to illuminate the spacecraft with gamma-rays from a wide variety of angles, just as would be the case when the satellite was eventually placed in orbit. Calibration is extremely important prior to launch of any scientific payload into orbit, as it is the only way scientists really know just what they are looking at. So, we spend a great deal of time calibrating experiments before they fly. This particular series of tests took over a week to complete, and as you can see from the pictures, were not well-suited for people who are afraid of heights!
