These photos of the eight BATSE modules were taken shortly after their arrival at TRW in the fall of 1989. From Huntsville, the BATSE flight hardware was shipped by truck through Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, El Paso, New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California to TRW in Redondo Beach. After they arrived, each one had to be tested thoroughly to verify that they had made the 2,000 mile trip with no problems or malfunctions. In the upper figure, an unidentified BATSE team member is measuring the alignment of the Large Area Detector with respect to the BATSE Optical Alignment cubes and comparing these measurements to those taken at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The other six modules, with foam covers on the lower Spectroscopy Detectors (SDs) await testing, including one with a radioactive source holder mounted to the front. On the bottom, Robert Austin (left) works with some BATSE ground hardware while Dr. John Horack (front) and Mr. Scott Storey (rear) perform functional testing of one of the BATSE modules. The white box in the extreme foreground with the black handle is the BATSE Power Module, which provides both 15V and 5V power to the BATSE detectors and central electronics. Several of the BATSE heater circuits are also routed through this box.
