Linda Godwin used the remote manipulator arm on Atlantis to lift the 17-ton CGRO out of the payload bay. Although the satellite might not weigh much in orbit, it still is quite massive, giving it lots of inertia. It's hard to get moving, and equally hard to stop. With the delicate nature of the robot arm (it cannot even support its own weight on the ground, but works great in space!), this was a challenging task. The GRO is still the most massive science payload ever lifted into space by the shuttle.
