sts37_crew.jpg

The crew of STS-37 consisted of (back left) Commander Steven Nagel, (back right) Pilot Ken Cameron, (front left) Mission Specialist Jerry Ross, (front center) Mission Specialist Linda Godwin, and (front right) Mission specialist Jay Apt. Ken, Linda, and Jay were making their first flights into space, while Steve and Jerry had each flown a few times before. During the mission, Jerry Ross and Jay Apt performed a set of spacewalks in the cargo bay of the orbiter, one to un-stick the GRO antenna. Linda and Steve are now married. This picture is taken on the mid-deck of the Atlantis, looking from the side where the hatch is located. The "nose" of the orbiter is to the left, and Ken has his left hand on the yellow handle to the hatch, which leads to the cargo bay during EVA.

The logo that Linda is holding is the mission patch for STS-37. Above the Earth's atmosphere there are seven stars (the "7" in 37), and there are three stars (the "3" in 37) that are obscured by the glare of the flash. The GRO on the left and the orbiter on the right are connected by a rainbow in the shape of the greek letter "gamma," symbolic of the energy range in which the experiments on Compton are sensitive to radiation. Each of the astronauts names are on the perimeter of the patch, with the commander and pilot on top, and the three mission specialists at the bottom.
