In this image, TRW technicians are installing the 100 kg (220 pound) BATSE Module B2 into position. This is the "front" end of the spacecraft (+x axis), looking from the starboard side. Immediately below the module, appearing as a large black circular disk is one of the four reaction wheels, used by the spacecraft for maneuvering and attitude control. COMPTEL is in the background at left, with a protective cloth over the instrument, and OSSE is in the background at the right. The upper BATSE modules were relatively easy to install using the crane (you can see the yellow beam near the ceiling that supports the crane). The lower ones, however, had to first be turned upside-down before being installed. That made more than a few scientists a bit nervous the first time we tried it!
